Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Small shrubs 1.5–5 dm tall.

Stems: Young stems viscid or glabrous to sparsely pubescent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, but often closely spaced and appearing subopposite or subverticillate. Blades linear–filiform, 15–54 mm long, 0.3–1.8 mm wide. Apex bluntly acute. Surfaces glabrous or sparsely puberulent. Margins entire. 1-veined. Sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, solitary in the leaf axils, 5–6-merous, pedicels ca. 18–30 mm long, elongating to 45–60 mm long in fruit, viscid or sparsely puberulent, bracteate, bracteoles absent. Calyx of 5 sepals; Calyx lobes narrowly lanceolate, 4–5.3 mm long, enlarging up to ca. 6 mm long in fruit. Corolla reddish purple, campanulate, 6–10 mm long, the lobes narrowly obovate, imbricate. Stamens as many as and opposite the corolla lobes; filaments connate at base, adnate to corolla tube; anthers dithecal. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule placentation free-central; style 1.

Fruit: Capsules ovoid; thick and hard; 5–6 mm long; regularly dehiscent. Seeds numerous; nearly black; irregularly shaped; 1–1.1 mm long; seed coat crustaceous.
